Long weekend games and family tournaments have room on this braid-patterned Ararat chess and backgammon set (nardi), a 60 cm (about 24 in) board carved out of solid beech in one piece. The braid accompanies the copyrighted outline of Mount Ararat, while bronze letters and numbers label the chess field.
Ararat’s two peaks, Greater and Lesser Ararat, belong to a single volcanic massif, and many Armenians hold the mountain sacred. In backgammon, each of the two players moves fifteen checkers around twenty-four points, and the first to bear them all off wins; the game is held to be among the oldest anywhere and rewards a quick, calculating mind. Chess, with its sixty-four squares, completes the pair.
