Carved from a single piece of beech wood, this 50 cm (about 20 in) chess and backgammon set (nardi) brings together a braid pattern and the copyrighted outline of Mount Ararat. Beech is a hard, dense and hard-wearing wood, well suited to a board that sees frequent play. The coordinates of the chessboard, letters and numbers alike, are cast in bronze.
Tradition places the landing of Noah’s Ark on Ararat after the Flood, and Armenia’s coat of arms shows mountain and Ark together on its central shield. Backgammon is counted among the world’s oldest games and rewards reasoning: players think flexibly, plan sequences of moves and make their choices quickly.
