This walnut backgammon set (nardi) is named after “Anush”, the poem in which Hovhannes Tumanyan tells the tragic story of the love between Anush and Saro, drawn from real events. A fragment of the poem is engraved on one side, built up from a combination of complex elements. The board, 60 cm (about 24 in) across, is carved from one piece of walnut and set with hornbeam inlay.
Turn the board over and the other side is laid out for a game of checkers, decorated with engraved braid patterns. The set also bears our copyrighted outline of Mount Ararat, the mountain known in Armenian as Masis; Hrachya Ohanyan drew it, and the workshop has used it since 2000. With literature on one face and a second game on the other, the board has as much to look at as to play on.
Every set is completely handcrafted and comes with a 25-year guarantee certificate. A fitting choice for admirers of Tumanyan’s poetry and for anyone who likes a board with a story behind it.
