Friends who meet for a regular game have two options on this Mount Ararat chess and backgammon set (nardi) with a braid pattern, 50 cm (about 20 in) across. It is carved from one piece of beech wood, engraved with that ornamental braid and decorated with the copyrighted outline of the mountain. Letters and numbers cast in bronze mark the chessboard.
On a clear day Mount Ararat can be made out from Yerevan. Backgammon, regarded as one of the oldest of all games, mixes chance and skill: the roll decides what is possible, while flexible thinking, sound calculation and quick decisions decide what happens next. Chess, its companion on the board, is pure strategy.
