Sized for a coffee table, a desk or a bookshelf, this compact Mount Ararat chess and backgammon set (nardi) keeps two games on one 30 cm (about 12 in) board. One piece of beech wood was carved to make it; the surface carries the copyrighted outline of Mount Ararat, and the chess field is marked with letters and numbers cast in bronze.
Tradition holds that Noah’s Ark settled on Mount Ararat once the Flood was over. Backgammon has a long history of its own: it is reckoned among the oldest known games, and as a game of logic it calls for a nimble mind, careful calculation of each series of moves and quick decisions. The chess pieces and checkers are made of beech and walnut, so the light and dark sides are easy to tell apart.
