Two games share one 60 cm (about 24 in) board in this classic ornamental chess and backgammon set (nardi), a two-in-one model made from plywood and beech wood. Its surface carries an engraved Armenian ornamental motif. Armenian ornament is rich in motifs and comes in many types and forms, and this set shows one of them.
Backgammon has a long enough history to be counted, by most accounts, among the world’s oldest games, and despite the roll of the dice it is a game of logic: it favours players who think flexibly, work out the order of their moves accurately and decide without delay. Chess, the other game in the set, involves no luck at all. At this size neither game feels cramped, so the board suits long sessions at the table.
