Square, 50 cm (about 20 in) to a side and built from plywood and beech wood, this classic chess and backgammon set (nardi) gives each game a comfortable field and carries an engraved Armenian ornamental motif. Armenian ornament works with a broad vocabulary of motifs, types and forms, and the motif engraved on this board is one word from it.
Logic sits at the heart of backgammon, a game reputed to be among the oldest ever devised: it repays players who stay flexible, count their moves accurately in sequence and decide without dithering. Chess, by comparison, is calculation from the first move to the last. The engraved ornament keeps the board decorative when it is not in play.
