Plywood and beech wood are combined in this compact classic chess and backgammon set (nardi), which measures 30 cm (about 12 in) across, and an Armenian ornamental motif is engraved on it. Armenian ornament has never kept to a single pattern: it varies its motifs, types and forms widely, and this small board carries one of its designs.
In backgammon, one of the oldest games people know, the dice set out the options and the players do the thinking: a flexible approach, an exact count of the moves ahead and quick decisions are what the game values. Chess, played on the same small board, depends on the players alone. Between games, the set takes up little more space than a large book.
