Large enough to anchor a games room or a library, this Mount Ararat chess and backgammon set (nardi) spans 60 cm (about 24 in), carved from one block of beech wood. The board carries the copyrighted outline of the mountain, and its chess field has letters and numbers cast in bronze.
Mount Ararat stands in present-day Turkey, close to the Armenian border, and the monastery of Khor Virap lies on the Ararat plain within sight of it. A board this size leaves both games space to spare. Backgammon, often named among the oldest games in the world, favours players who can calculate a run of moves accurately and decide fast; chess, on the other hand, gives each player sixteen pieces and no luck to lean on.
