Many Armenians regard Mount Ararat as a sacred mountain, and its copyrighted outline sets the tone of this Mount Ararat chess and backgammon set (nardi). Carved from one piece of beech wood, the 40 cm (about 16 in) board holds both games, and even the letters and numbers of the chessboard are cut into the wood. At this size it fits a coffee table or a desk without taking it over.
The mountain is also widely seen as an emblem of Armenian identity. Backgammon, generally held to be one of the oldest games in existence, asks for an agile mind, exact calculation of the moves to come and decisions made without hesitation. Chess is played out on sixty-four squares, with nothing hidden from either player, so one board holds a game of pure calculation and another in which chance and skill meet.
