Around the dining table, this Mount Ararat chess and backgammon set (nardi) gives a family both games on one 50 cm (about 20 in) board. It is carved from a single block of beech and carries the copyrighted outline of Mount Ararat. Its chessboard letters and numbers are carved, not applied.
The same mountain appears on Armenia’s coat of arms, whose central shield shows Ararat together with Noah’s Ark. Backgammon itself is believed to be one of the oldest games played anywhere; it turns on logic, on a flexible mind, sound calculation of several moves ahead and a readiness to decide quickly. In Armenia the game is usually called nardi, and this board serves for long nardi as well as short nardi.
