Engraved on this backgammon set (nardi) is the eternity sign, or arevakhach: a whirling, sun-like wheel around a centre, which expresses the idea of eternal life and serves as a symbol of Armenian national identity. Carved from one piece of beech, the board measures 50 cm (about 20 in) and also carries our copyrighted outline of Mount Ararat, while its back is reserved for checkers.
In medieval Armenian culture the sign stood for eternal, heavenly life, and few motifs are as common in Armenian architecture: it appears carved into church walls, gravestones and khachkars. Ararat, for its part, is held by many Armenians to be a sacred mountain. Hrachya Ohanyan is the author of the outline, a copyrighted design that our workshop has used since 2000.
