In homes where the board comes out after dinner, this 60 cm (about 24 in) eternity backgammon set (nardi) gives two players plenty of room. Beech, carved in one piece, forms the board, which carries an engraving of the Armenian eternity sign and our copyrighted outline of Mount Ararat, with a checkers grid on the back.
The sign expresses the idea of eternity, and Armenians use it as a symbol of their identity. Also called the wheel of eternity, it may have different numbers of arms, and besides stone carving it appears in illuminated manuscripts and on carpets. The mountain in the outline is a volcanic massif with two summits, Greater and Lesser Ararat; Hrachya Ohanyan created the outline, and it has been a feature of the workshop’s boards since 2000.
