This Mount Ararat chess set, 50 cm (about 20 in) across, is carved from a single piece of beech wood and carries our copyrighted outline of the mountain on its board. The motif was created by Hrachya Ohanyan and has been part of our work since 2000.
Open the board and the players see Mount Ararat from different sides, one from the Armenian side and one from the Turkish side. Known in Armenian as Masis, the mountain is widely regarded as Armenia’s principal national symbol, and according to tradition Noah’s Ark came to rest on it after the Flood. Pale, fine-grained beech holds the detail of the carving well, and the letters and numbers along the field are carved too.
