Measuring 40 cm (about 16 in) a side, this Mount Ararat chess set pairs carved wood with bronze: the board is cut from one piece of beech, while the letters and numbers along the chess field are cast in bronze. It also carries our copyrighted outline of the mountain.
From Yerevan, Ararat is visible on clear days. The outline comes from Hrachya Ohanyan and, under copyright, has appeared on our chess sets since 2000. Opened for play, the board presents Ararat to one player as seen from the Armenian side and to the other as seen from the Turkish side. Bronze against beech makes the coordinates easy to pick out during a game.
