Chess clubs, school chess corners and family rooms with space to spare suit this large Mount Ararat chess set: a 60 cm (about 24 in) board carved whole out of one beech block. The wood is pale, with a straw-like tone, and it carries our copyrighted outline of the mountain.
Since 2000 the outline, Hrachya Ohanyan’s copyrighted design, has been part of our sets, and here it has plenty of room. Once the board is open, the two seats give two views: from one, Ararat is seen from the Armenian side; from the other, it is seen from the Turkish side. A board of this size is best given a permanent home, for instance on a games table or a broad sideboard, where it can stay open between sessions.
