Two motifs share this braid and Mount Ararat chess and backgammon set (nardi): the copyrighted outline of Ararat, a mountain seen by many as Armenia’s foremost national symbol, and an engraved ornamental braid. Its 40 cm (about 16 in) board was carved from a single piece of beech, and its chess field is marked out with letters and numbers cast in bronze.
Armenians know the mountain as Masis. The braid, a pattern of interlaced strands, adds a second, purely ornamental layer to the design. Backgammon, believed to be one of the world’s oldest games, is a logical contest that calls for a supple mind, precise reckoning and quick judgement, while chess, its partner on this board, is decided by the players alone.
