A small board with room for both games, this two-in-one Mount Ararat chess and backgammon set (nardi) measures 30 x 30 x 3 cm (about 12 in), and its modest size makes it easy to take along to a friend’s house. Carved in one piece from beech wood, the board bears the copyrighted Mount Ararat outline; the chess field is labelled with bronze letters and numbers.
Armenians call the mountain Masis. It is a volcanic massif crowned by two summits, Greater Ararat and Lesser Ararat. On this board, chess offers sixteen pieces a side on an eight-by-eight field, while backgammon, regarded as one of the world’s oldest games, values a flexible mind, precise reckoning of moves and the ability to decide fast.
