This pomegranate and grapes backgammon set (nardi) carries two fruits that stand for life and well-being, for prosperity and abundance, engraved together on one side of the board. It is one of our classic models, carved from one piece of beech and measuring 60 cm (about 24 in), and the back is laid out as a draughts board.
The grapes point to the long tradition of wine-making in the Armenian highlands, where archaeologists working in the Areni cave uncovered a site described as the oldest known winery in the world. Brought out on a coffee table after a family meal, the set invites two players to a game of nardi, and the engraved fruit gives the rest of the table something to talk about.
