Carved from one piece of beech, this classic pomegranate and grapes backgammon set (nardi) measures 60 cm (about 24 in), with both fruits engraved on one side and a field for checkers on the reverse. Together the two fruits symbolise life and prosperity, abundance and well-being.
Among the ornaments of Armenian manuscript miniatures the pomegranate appears again and again, and here the engraving pairs it with grapes. Both long and short nardi are played on the same field, so one set covers whichever version a household prefers, from a quick game before dinner to a long evening match.
