Measuring 60 cm (about 24 in), this backgammon set (nardi) has been carved from one piece of beech and brings together two national images. The coat of arms of Armenia is carved on one side, the back is prepared for draughts, and the board bears our copyrighted outline of Mount Ararat, the mountain widely regarded as Armenia’s principal national symbol.
Armenia’s coat of arms shows a shield held by an eagle and a lion, and the shield carries the arms of the four royal houses of historic Armenia. The carving on this board is based on the emblem of Armenia’s First Republic, which existed from 1918 to 1920. The silhouette of the mountain is Hrachya Ohanyan’s creation and is copyrighted; the workshop has used it on its sets since 2000.
