Whether it is opened between two players or left closed on a sideboard, this 50 cm (about 20 in) backgammon set (nardi) shows the coat of arms of Armenia and Mount Ararat. It is carved from one piece of beech; the coat of arms appears on one side, the mountain in our copyrighted outline, and the back doubles as a draughts board.
The carving follows the emblem used by the First Republic of Armenia (1918–1920), and it carries the arms of four royal dynasties of historic Armenia. Armenia’s coat of arms also shows Mount Ararat, together with Noah’s Ark, so the outline and the emblem share a subject. The outline is Hrachya Ohanyan’s own design; it is protected by copyright and has marked our boards since 2000.
