It takes one piece of beech wood to make the round board of this circular chess set: our workshop carves it into a circle 60 cm (about 24 in) across and decorates it with an ornamental weave pattern. Pale, hard-wearing beech gives the woven motif a light, even ground.
The pieces, sixteen for each player, are made of beech and walnut, so the two sides are told apart by the colour of their wood. On a circle this broad they keep their distance even in a crowded middlegame, and there is space around the table for a family to gather and watch. A board this large is made to be left out, where it becomes part of the room’s furnishings.
