Walnut and bronze define this chess and backgammon set (nardi): walnut, a warm brown wood with a long tradition in fine furniture, is paired here with bronze details. The set is generous in size, 60 x 60 x 3 cm (about 24 in), and leaves plenty of space for both games.
Walnut can range in colour from pale brown to dark chocolate, with a grain that is usually straight, so the shade of the wood can differ from one set to the next. The two games in this set make a good pair: backgammon, usually called nardi in Armenia, mixes the luck of the dice with skill, and the same board serves long and short nardi alike, while chess is decided by sixteen pieces a side and no luck at all.
