Our workshop carves this compact classic chess set from a single piece of beech wood, and at 30 cm (about 12 in) it is small enough for a desk yet still a complete game. Its design pairs a zigzag lattice border with an expanded playing field, and the letters and numbers of the board are carved into the wood.
Small boards suit players who like to keep a position on the go: set on a bookshelf or a side table, an unfinished game can wait for the next spare moment. The carved coordinates help with that, because a position can be noted square by square and set up again after a tidy-up. Chess itself is the same on any size of board: eight rows of eight squares, sixteen pieces a side and nothing left to luck.
