Zigzag lines worked into a lattice make up the border of this classic chess set, an ornament built from line and angle alone. The board is 40 cm (about 16 in) square and carved from one piece of beech wood, and its letters and numbers are carved as well.
Families learning the game together will find the carved letters and numbers useful, since a move is far easier to explain when every square has a name. The pieces come in beech and walnut, a lighter wood for one army and a darker one for the other. Chess asks for no dice: what happens on the sixty-four squares is decided by the players alone.
