Chess first, then a round of backgammon: this Mount Ararat chess and backgammon set (nardi) suits players who enjoy both games and want a single board for them. The 40 cm (about 16 in) board is carved from one solid piece of beech. Its decoration combines the contour outline of Mount Ararat with a braid pattern, and the letters and numbers that mark the chessboard are carved into the wood as well.
Mount Ararat, visible from Yerevan when the sky is clear, is widely regarded as Armenia’s principal national symbol. Backgammon, thought to be among the world’s oldest games, is at heart a contest of logic that rewards flexible thinking, accurate counting of the moves ahead and quick decisions. Chess, played on the same board, leaves the result to the players alone.
