Named for its contour outline, this chess and backgammon set (nardi) is a compact 30 cm (about 12 in) board carved out of a single beech block. Beyond the outline, its distinguishing detail is metal: the letters and numbers of the chessboard are cast in bronze.
Backgammon is often listed among the world’s oldest games, and it is a game of logic as well as dice: a nimble mind, exact reckoning of moves and swift decisions carry a player towards bearing off all fifteen checkers first, which is how the game is won. Chess, with its eight-by-eight board and nothing hidden from either side, completes the pair.
