Widely seen by Armenians as their foremost national symbol and an emblem of their identity, Mount Ararat is the subject of this chess and backgammon set (nardi). Our copyrighted outline of the mountain marks its board, which measures 40 cm (about 16 in) and is cut from a single piece of beech.
Its chess figures and backgammon checkers come in beech and walnut, so a pale wood and a darker one face each other across the field. As for backgammon, it is said to rank with the oldest games known and is at heart a game of logic: it favours players who stay adaptable, work out the order of their moves precisely and make up their minds fast. Chess, its partner here, needs no dice at all.
