Friends who call in for a game get to choose between two with this chess and backgammon set (nardi). The 40 cm (about 16 in) board sits easily on a coffee table between two armchairs. Our workshop carves it from a single piece of beech, gives it a contour outline and cuts letters and numbers into the chessboard.
In Armenia backgammon goes by the name nardi, and one board serves both its long and its short version. Widely thought to be among the oldest games anywhere, it is a game of logic that favours a nimble mind, accurate planning of each run of moves and quick decisions. When the nardi game is over, the same set turns to chess.
