Two games share one generous board, 60 cm (about 24 in) square, in this classic chess and backgammon set (nardi). The whole set is carved in one piece from beech wood, and a zigzag lattice border sets its classic design apart. On the chessboard, the letters and numbers that name the squares are carved into the wood as well.
Backgammon is thought to reach back further than almost any other game, and it is a contest of logic as well as luck: flexible thinking, an accurate count of the moves to come and the nerve to decide quickly are what count. Chess, by contrast, needs no dice, just sixteen pieces a side and a clear head. A board of this breadth suits a large dining or games table, where both games can be played in comfort through a long evening.
