On a train journey, at a holiday cottage or in a student room, this classic chess and backgammon set (nardi) fits both games onto one compact board, 30 cm (about 12 in) square, carved in a single piece from beech, a hard-wearing wood. A zigzag lattice runs around its border, and the letters and numbers of the chess field are carved too.
Backgammon, widely held to be one of the oldest games, may begin with a roll of the dice, but logic decides it: a flexible mind, a good count of the coming moves and a quick decision serve a player best. Chess, on the same board, offers the opposite: no dice, nothing hidden, every move in the open.
