A living-room coffee table is the natural place for this classic chess and backgammon set (nardi), whose 40 cm (about 16 in) board is a single carved piece of beech. A zigzag lattice decorates its border, and carved letters and numbers mark out the files and ranks of the chessboard.
Neighbours who drop in for coffee can choose their game: chess, where nothing is left to chance, or backgammon, which many reckon among the oldest games of all.
