Walnut, in tones that run from pale brown to dark chocolate, is carved in one piece to make this pomegranate tree backgammon set (nardi). Sized at 60 cm (about 24 in), the board has a contour outline, and the tree is engraved on one side and set with epoxy resin.
The pomegranate is taken as a symbol of abundance and well-being, and on this board the motif takes the form of the tree. Turning the board over reveals a field for checkers. The set looks most at home where wooden furniture already sets the tone: a study with a walnut desk, a dining room with an old dresser, or a reading corner.
