One side of this backgammon set (nardi) is engraved with Armenian ornament, a tradition that draws on a wide variety of motifs, types and forms. The 60 cm (about 24 in) square board is carved whole from one piece of beech and also carries our copyrighted outline of Mount Ararat.
Mount Ararat is widely regarded as an emblem of Armenian identity, so ornament and mountain belong to the same heritage. First used in 2000, the outline is the work of Hrachya Ohanyan. Open, the board gives two players a full field for either long or short nardi, and its back takes a game of draughts. Between games the engraved side makes it worth leaving out on a sideboard or a shelf rather than putting it away.
