This 30 cm (about 12 in) Mount Ararat chess set begins as one piece of beech, a hard, dense wood, and the board is carved from it in its entirety, down to the letters and numbers beside the squares. Our copyrighted outline of the mountain gives the board its motif.
Hrachya Ohanyan is the outline’s author; it has been in use on our sets since 2000. With the board open, the mountain is seen from two directions, from the Armenian side by one player and from the Turkish side by the other. Khor Virap, a monastery on the Ararat plain, lies within sight of the real mountain. Small as it is, the board offers the complete eight-by-eight field.
