A reading corner or a games shelf is a good home for this 40 cm (about 16 in) carpet classic chess and backgammon set (nardi), finished with natural beeswax. Its beech board was carved in one piece and then engraved with ornament drawn from Armenian carpets. Letters and numbers in cast bronze identify the files and ranks of the chessboard.
In Armenia, backgammon is commonly known as nardi, and the same field is used for its long and short forms. Thought of as one of the world’s oldest games, it is decided by quick thinking and accurate calculation as well as by the roll. Chess, the other game on this board, leaves nothing to chance.
