Compact at 30 cm (about 12 in), this carpet classic chess and backgammon set (nardi) comes from one beech piece, carved and then finished with natural beeswax. Beech is a wood that takes a finish well. Patterns used in Armenian carpets are engraved on the board, and its chessboard is lettered and numbered in cast bronze.
The small format keeps both games within easy reach on a side table or a desk. Backgammon, among the oldest games we know of, rewards a flexible mind, sharp calculation of the moves ahead and fast decisions, while chess unfolds over sixty-four squares and owes nothing to luck.
