Mount Ararat, carved into the board of this 40 cm (about 16 in) chess set, is the mountain where, by tradition, Noah’s Ark settled when the Flood was over. The carving follows the copyrighted outline created by Hrachya Ohanyan, a design our sets have carried since 2000, and the board is made of beech.
Once the board is opened, the two players look at the mountain from different sides: one sees it from the Armenian side, the other from the Turkish side. For the game itself there is the familiar eight-by-eight field, with carved letters and numbers naming the squares, and a full set of pieces in pale beech and darker walnut. It is a comfortable size for a writing desk, with room left over for a notebook to record the moves.
