Two-sided and 60 cm (about 24 in) across, this backgammon set (nardi) carries Etchmiadzin Cathedral on one side and the coat of arms of Armenia on the other. The board is carved from a single block of solid wood and set with an inlay of another wood, and both images are engraved.
Etchmiadzin Cathedral serves as the mother church of the Armenian Apostolic Church and is regarded as the first Christian cathedral of ancient Armenia. Tradition places its construction in the early fourth century, and it ranks among the oldest cathedrals anywhere. The coat of arms is a version of the First Republic’s emblem (1918–1920) and carries the heraldry of historic Armenia’s four royal dynasties. With a church on one side and the national emblem on the other, the board can be shown either way round.
Handcrafted from start to finish, each set is backed by a 25-year guarantee certificate. Something to give at a christening, a church wedding or a name day in a family close to the Armenian Church.
