Whether two seasoned players face each other or a parent is teaching a child the moves, this 60 cm (about 24 in) snowflake backgammon set (nardi) gives them room to spread out. The board is a single piece of carved beech: one side is engraved with an Armenian ornament in a snowflake motif, and the outline of Mount Ararat, copyrighted by our workshop, is there as well.
The motifs, types and forms of Armenian ornament are many, and here it takes the shape of a snowflake. Ararat itself rises as a volcanic massif whose two summits are known as Greater and Lesser Ararat, and tradition says that Noah’s Ark settled on it after the Flood. The outline was devised by Hrachya Ohanyan and has been in use, under copyright, since 2000. Draughts can be played on the back.
