One block of beech, carved whole and then finished with natural beeswax, makes up this snowflake backgammon set (nardi), 60 cm (about 24 in) across. Pale and even in texture, beech takes a finish well. One side of the board carries an Armenian ornament in the form of a snowflake, and our copyrighted outline of Mount Ararat is part of the design too.
Armenian ornament has a rich store of motifs, types and forms, and this snowflake belongs to that tradition. On the coat of arms of Armenia, Mount Ararat is shown together with Noah’s Ark. Hrachya Ohanyan drew the outline used here, and the workshop has worked with it since 2000. The back of the board is marked out for checkers.
