A combination of complex elements and braid patterns covers the whole surface of this two-sided backgammon set (nardi), which measures 60 cm (about 24 in). It is carved from one piece of solid wood, inlaid with a second wood, and carries our copyrighted outline of Mount Ararat.
One side is engraved with a scene from Yarhushta, the victory dance of the Armenian warriors of Sassoun. War dances of this kind carry the heroic spirit and unbending will of the Armenian people. In this club dance the movements seem to take the place of weapons, echoing in their own way the force of the blows and the sound of clashing arms.
The reverse side is meant for checkers and carries an engraved wicker ornament. The Ararat outline is the work of Hrachya Ohanyan; protected by copyright, it has been part of our range since 2000.
