Our workshop carves this 50 cm (about 20 in) Armenian alphabet backgammon set (nardi) from a single piece of straight-grained beech, and it is one of the classic models in our range. Its engraving is the alphabet itself, created, according to tradition, by Mesrop Mashtots in 405.
The letters invite more than one reading: in a popular interpretation each stands for a word, and in sequence they form a prayer that opens with “Creator” and closes with “Christ”. UNESCO has inscribed Armenian letter art, from calligraphy to carpets, embroidery and jewellery, on its list of intangible cultural heritage. Played on regularly, whether for backgammon or for checkers on its back, the board keeps the alphabet in view of the whole family.
