Carved from one piece of beech and finished with natural beeswax, this classic Armenian alphabet backgammon set (nardi) measures 40 cm (about 16 in), and its back is marked out for draughts. The engraving presents the Armenian alphabet, which according to tradition Mesrop Mashtots created in 405.
Mashtots’s letters did more than spell words: they also served as numerals. A popular reading goes further and gives each letter the meaning of a word, so that the whole alphabet reads as a prayer beginning with “Creator” and ending with “Christ”. A board of this size suits a family table, where children can look over the letters between moves.
