Two players facing each other across a small table have all the room they need on this 40 cm (about 16 in) pomegranate tree backgammon set (nardi), and after the game it fits easily on a shelf. It is carved from one piece of walnut, a wood of warm brown tones, and one side carries an engraved pomegranate tree filled with epoxy resin. Our copyrighted outline of Mount Ararat completes the design.
In Armenian tradition the pomegranate stands for abundance and well-being, and here it grows into a whole tree. Tradition also holds that Noah’s Ark came to rest on Ararat after the Flood. The outline of the mountain is Hrachya Ohanyan’s design, and since 2000 it has been one of the workshop’s signatures. A second game waits on the reverse, which is laid out for draughts.
