At 60 cm (about 24 in), this pomegranate and grapes backgammon set (nardi) has been carved in one piece from beech and decorated with arched panels, and its back is ruled for checkers. Both fruits are engraved on one side, where they stand for life, prosperity, abundance and well-being, and the board also bears our copyrighted outline of Mount Ararat.
Armenian tradition counts the pomegranate among its national symbols and also links it with fertility; the fruit was widely used in church ornament and in manuscript miniatures. Carved pomegranates and grapevines once decorated Zvartnots, an early medieval cathedral, so the pairing on this board has deep roots in Armenian architecture. Hrachya Ohanyan created the Ararat outline, which has been part of our boards since 2000.
