A single piece of beech is carved into this compact backgammon set (nardi), 40 cm (about 16 in) across, and one side is engraved with an ornament. The board also carries our copyrighted outline of Mount Ararat, the mountain Armenians call Masis.
Backgammon, called nardi in Armenia, is thought to be among the oldest board games anywhere. Ararat is also the mountain on which, as tradition has it, Noah’s Ark grounded when the Flood ended. Hrachya Ohanyan designed the outline, and it has run through our work since 2000. At this size the set is easy to take along when visiting friends or travelling, and a game on it needs no more than a small table; with draughts marked out on the back, two games travel together.
