Ornamental Bas-Relief Chess & Backgammon Set, 60 cm

When one half of a family plays chess and the other half prefers backgammon, this ornamental chess and backgammon set (nardi) keeps them at one table: its 60 cm (about 24 in) board holds both games. It follows our classic two-in-one design, carved from a single piece of beech wood, and its surface is decorated with bas-relief ornaments combined with intricate elements.

In bas-relief, a pattern rises only slightly above its background, and ornament of this kind exists in a great variety of motifs, types and forms. Backgammon, which many consider one of the oldest games anywhere, is a game of logic that prizes flexible thinking, exact calculation of each sequence of moves and decisiveness. The chess field, in turn, is marked with letters and numbers cast in bronze.
