Placed in the middle of a round table, this three-player backgammon set (nardi) lets three people take part in one game on a special three-sided board. It measures 50 cm (about 20 in) and is carved from a single piece of solid wood.
Engraved Armenian ornamental patterns decorate all three sides, and the engraving is filled with epoxy resin. Armenian ornament knows a great many motifs, types and forms, and the board carries that variety into a game for three.
Nerses Nersesyan devised this form of the game in 2007. Its rules give each player 15 checkers in a colour of their own – white, black or red – and the game goes to whoever bears off all of theirs first.
